Hartwick Morning Standard French Press

The Morning Standard is the least expensive way we know to brew genuinely good coffee. Heat-resistant borosilicate glass, a steel frame that protects the carafe and keeps it off the counter, and a plunger with a properly fitted mesh — nothing exotic, everything necessary. French press rewards patience more than equipment: use a coarse grind (fine grounds slip through mesh and over-extract), water just off the boil, and one gram of coffee for every 15 grams of water. Steep four minutes, press slowly, pour right away. The 350 ml suits a solo cup, the 600 ml a couple, the liter a table. Replacement carafes and screens are cheap and available, which is our favorite kind of durability.
