Hartwick Freshkeep Canister

The Freshkeep is the storage upgrade almost everyone should make before buying anything fancier: an opaque stainless canister with a gasketed lid and a one-way valve. Freshly roasted beans release carbon dioxide for days after roasting; the valve lets that gas escape without letting oxygen in, the same principle as the valve on a good coffee bag. The steel body blocks light entirely, and the lid seal keeps kitchen moisture out. It will not pull a vacuum like pricier canisters, but moving beans out of an opened paper bag and into any sealed, dark container is the single biggest freshness gain — the rest is refinement. Holds about 250 g of whole beans. Wipe clean with a dry cloth; skip the dishwasher to protect the valve.
